DraftKings enters Puerto Rico with Foxwoods sportsbook launch

For Puerto Rican sports fans, the launch introduces major operator competition to the Caribbean market. For the industry, it signals a potential regional arms race as operators seek growth beyond saturated mainland territories.

DraftKings officially launched its first Caribbean retail sportsbook at Foxwoods El San Juan Casino today, November 14th, positioning for digital expansion in Puerto Rico’s passionate sports market. The move expands the operator’s regulated footprint to 29 jurisdictions, including 28 U.S. states, Washington D.C., Ontario, and now Puerto Rico.

“Puerto Rico has an incredible sports culture,” said Paul Liberman, DraftKings President of Operations. “We’re thrilled to provide eligible customers with a fun, seamless, and responsible way to engage with their favorite sports.”

The property’s fourth anniversary celebration featured Yankees legend Jorge Posada placing the ceremonial first bet. The new sportsbook includes betting kiosks, an over-the-counter window, and a dedicated sports lounge.

Tripartite Partnership Model

The collaboration combines DraftKings’ technology, the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation’s gaming expertise, and LionGrove’s local development. Rodney Butler, Tribal Nation Chairman, called the opening “another exciting milestone,” while LionGrove CEO Andro Nodarse-Leon said it “reinforces our commitment to creating exceptional experiences.”

Digital Rollout Pending

DraftKings plans to launch its online sportsbook in Puerto Rico pending licensure and regulatory approvals, following its typical retail-first expansion strategy.

Responsible Gaming Focus

All three partners emphasized consumer protections, with DraftKings promoting its My Budget Builder and My Stat Sheet tools. The Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation pledged continued support for problem gaming awareness programs.
